Senior Engineer - Catalyst Performance and Diagnostics


Applies basic knowledge of chemistry and its related industrial processes in conjunction with engineering principles and practices to identify and advance solutions for design, manufacturing and quality problems. Works with cross functional teams on projects that require material selection, failure analysis, material characterization, interpretation and writing of specifications, product quality inspections, material process quality audits, material process development, production process validation and material property data. Recognizes and promotes the application of beneficial emerging materials and materials processing technology.

Uses prescribed and innovative methods, and works with limited guidance. Participates as a team member and actively contributes towards team goals. Carries out partially defined and moderately complex tasks. Demonstrates and applies good understanding and knowledge of chemistry to support lines of business. Applies chemistry skills and knowledge and continues to develop experience in creating engineering solutions.



Laboratory Test Technology – Chemical - The chemist shall be generally knowledgeable about chemical lab test technology and test methods and knowledge of and familiarity with instrumental analyses to the extent that for partially defined, moderately complex problems, they are able to write relevant lab work plans, correctly interpret the data and report the results to customers with limited guidance.

Failure Analysis – Chemical - The chemist shall be generally knowledgeable about failure analysis, to the extent that for partially defined, moderately complex problems, they are able to initiate root cause data gathering and develop corrective actions with limited guidance. Also, the chemist shall have a working knowledge of different analytical and instrumental techniques that can be used to develop failure analysis skills.

Material Characterization Techniques – Chemical - The chemist shall be generally knowledgeable in characterizing materials/substances based upon of analysis techniques such as spectroscopy and chromatography, elemental analyses and classic wet-bench techniques as relevant to a specific subdiscipline such as petroleum, polymer, or organic chemistry.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

Bachelor of Science, or equivalent degree in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering required.


0-5 years of relevant work experience required.

Employee will be primarily responsible for: i) conduct experimental evaluation of diesel exhaust aftertreatment catalysts, ii) Construction and maintenance of the reactor and analytical tools as needed, iii) work with hourly technical staff to execute the laboratory testing, iv) elucidate catalyst functions, v) determine performance, evaluate durability, identify failure mode and suggest recovery solutions, vi) introduce new after treatment component technologies through the established process, vii) evaluate operational strategies, viii) Documentation and presentations to internal and external customers, ix) develop detailed understanding of chemistry & kinetics to support device-level model development, x) work closely with catalyst suppliers at a detail level to communicate Cummins catalyst needs and identify candidate catalyst formulations. xi) develop diagnostics procedures for evaluation of catalysts from engine testing and the field, xii) work closely with internal customers to support aftertreatment systems R&D and to understand future aftertreatment system requirements. xiii) maintain currency in the key areas of diesel exhaust aftertreatment, including familiarity with literature and competitive information.
