Responsibilities
Full time position working 36 hours per week day shift.
JOB SUMMARY:
Provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.
Provides quality nursing care to radiation oncology patients under the direction of the radiation oncologists. Monitors care and provides education to patients for specific needs, i.e., dietary planning, medications, and radiation side effects. Provides support and assistance to the cancer patient and their family, and provides access to outside resources to optimize patient care.
Responsible for assisting in maintaining a safe working environment throughout the organization by adhering to all safety management policies and procedures which reflect the mission and philosophy of Ascension Health System.
Attends all mandatory in-service programs and maintains professional and education requirements.
Qualifications
Education Required:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Education Preferred:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist
Graduate of a National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited school
Registration, Certification and / or Licensure Required:
Valid license in the state of Indiana obtained by hire date into this position
BLS within 90 days of entering this position
Registration, Certification and / or Licensure Preferred:
Experience Required:
Three years experience in nursing with one year oncology experience in inpatient nursing, physicians office, radiation therapy, hospice, or home health care.
Experience Preferred:
Three years experience in the field of Oncology, specifically Radiation Oncology
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:
Must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the patient. Must possess the ability to assess patient data relative to age specific needs and provide care as described in the department¿s policies and procedures.
Knowledge in physical assessment, aseptic techniques, IV skills, and all aspects of infection control.
Demonstrate skills in using special equipment such and CVA devices, infusion pumps, PCA pumps, and oxygen equipment. Monitors emergency equipment and supplies.
Human relations skills in being able to handle patients and physicians with a high degree of courtesy and professionalism.
Basic computer skills to include (PC based or networked mainframe) patient management, charging, accessing patient information, FAX, typewriters, telephone, and photocopying familiarity.
Demonstrates organizational skills and performs work with limited supervision.
Must be able to understand organizational nursing department policies.
Adult education concepts must be understood. Must possess the ability and have the desire to provide patient and family education.
Willingness to learn and participate in research protocols and tumor registry activities.
Ability to work under stressful conditions and understand the importance of the role of a team player in Radiation Oncology.
WORKING / ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases
Subject to electrical and radiation hazards
May be exposed to hazardous chemicals
Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment
Contact with patients under a wide variety of conditions
Handle emergency or crisis situations
Exposed to hot or noisy equipment
Requires judgment / action which could result in death of patient
Occasionally subjected to irregular hours
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Moderate physical effort
Lift up to 50 lbs.
Assist with lifting and moving patients
Pushes / pulls or moves / lifts heavy supplies / equipment
